Who We Are

Picture
Picture
Bearcat Solar Car is a student team at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team represents the University in the American Solar Challenge. Our mission is to design, build, and race a solar-powered racecar in the Formula Sun Grand Prix, an annual three-day endurance race. The team will also compete in the American Solar Challenge's biennial cross-country race held across 1500-2000 miles of public roads. In these events, the Bearcat Solar Car Team will compete against other universities from around the country. These events provide students with the opportunity to better understand and push the limits of solar technology.

The project is run through the College of Engineering and Applied Science, and the team's membership spans a wide variety of majors and disciplines. This includes both undergraduate and graduate students and students work closely with several faculty members. The team is open to students of all colleges of the University of Cincinnati.

The team is currently working towards finalizing and testing our designs and compete at the Formula Sun Grand Prix in June 2023 at Heartland Motorsports in Kansas.

We are very excited what this year brings for us!

The mechanical team finished fabrication of the chassis and solar array support, and continued fabricating the other mechanical systems (ex: braking) to meet race regulations. Electrical finalized their design and began fabricating the battery pack, solar array, and computer system.

The team successfully raised the funds to register for Formula Sun Grand Prix 2023 and submitted their Preliminary Vehicle Design Report.
When in-person classes and activities resumed, the team, with help from mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology senior design students, finished the mechanical design of the first car. The electrical team continued their research into the different electrical systems.
The team experienced major setbacks in recruitment and funding due to COVID-19, but through virtual meetings began research for the design of the first solar car.
Bearcat Solar Car was found by Mike Brassfield, class of 2022 Mechanical Engineering Technology, after being inspired by his time at the University of Kentucky and their solar car racing team.
